Multitasking Is The New Norm.

I love what I do. Capturing audio on the set of a film shoot is as exciting as it gets. I get to see the beginning of what could be a major motion picture one day. There have been times when the script calls for more talent than the budget can afford, that's when crew members may have to double as actors. Now I'm not afraid of the camera. After all, life is an act in itself, but I'll leave the acting to the professionals.

There are times when you have to play multiple roles in order to get the job done, especially with independent films. Crew members have to setup lights, frame the shot, mic the talent, etc. Being a team player and pitching in wherever possible is what helps to achieve the goals of the project.

In corporate America, multitasking is now a part of an average workday. Since companies have down-sized staff to minimal numbers, we all feel the pinch, so being able to work in different capacities of our job is the new norm. You don't have to take it sitting down, just follow the old saying, "If you can't “beat'em” “join'em” (especially if you want to keep your job).

Almost no one today has only one thing to do. We multitask without even thinking about it so, let's list a few helpful hints to our friends who have a hard time getting with the program.

1. Take your time. Multitasking doesn't mean do it faster. Give your body a chance to keep up with your brain. Thinking the process of through is the key. This is also where your time management skills will come in handy.

2. Details in the details. Write down what needs to be done from A to Z and follow it to the letter. Start with high priority items first on the list and low priority last. This way, you won't kill your brain trying to remember what to do next.

3. Your focus needs more focus. Don't misjudge a task because it seems easy. Pay attention to what needs to be done so you can finish it and move on the next item on your list.

4. Don't fill up on lunch. Finally break time, so don't go crazy and have the mega meal for lunch at the burger joint down the block. A big lunch plus washing it down with a super sized drink will catch up with you in an hour and all your hard multitasking will come to a crashing halt.

5. Admire your work. Go through your checklist to make sure all tasks are complete and error free. You would hate to turn in something that needs to be redone because of a simple error.

Being able to accomplish many goals in the small amount of allotted time can be rewarding and make you look good in the process. Good luck Mr. or Miss Multi-tasker.
